TMJ Treatment
Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Xeomin) has become an effective modality in managing Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder symptoms. Symptoms are characterized by jaw tenderness, headaches, and uncomfortable chewing.
How does it work?
Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the massetar muscle used for biting, chewing, facial movements, and speaking. The neurmodulator temporarly relaxes the muscle hence preventing stress-induced teeth grinding and jaw movement.
What to expect during the injection.
The treatment takes less than 10minutes and involves three to five targeted injections on each side of the ajw. Most people notice lessening pain and tension within a couple days and will see full effects within 2 weeks. Treatment relief usually lasts about 4 to 6months but will vary from individual to individual. Effects will last longer with routine injections which means fewer touch-ups and fewer trips.
